Medicare basics
Let’s put some meaning behind the letters and names. You don’t need to learn everything at once.
START WITH THE FOUNDATION
Medicare is federal health insurance generally for eligible people 65 or older. Some people qualify earlier because of a disability or certain conditions.
Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care and certain other services.
Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, and preventive services.
Together, Parts A and B are called Original Medicare.
UNDERSTAND YOUR CHOICES
These options do different jobs. Brianna can help explain where each fits and what to look at for your needs.
A private-plan alternative to Original Medicare that includes Part A and Part B, and usually Part D. Networks, referrals, costs, and benefits depend on the plan.
Talk through your optionsExtra insurance that helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs under Original Medicare. It doesn’t work with Medicare Advantage. Modern Medigap policies don’t include prescription drug coverage.
Ask about Supplement coverageHelps cover prescription drugs. You can get a separate drug plan with Original Medicare; most Medicare Advantage plans include it. Covered drugs, pharmacy networks, and costs vary.
Ask about prescription coverageMedicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage are different choices, not two names for the same coverage. Your enrollment rights and timing can differ, too.
